The Science Behind SNAP-X

For decades, scientists have attempted to restore coral reefs primarily by planting nursery-grown corals. However, these lab-grown specimens often face the same threats from warming waters and diseases, leading to their vulnerability. Dr. Wangpraseurt emphasized the need for diversity, explaining that introducing naturally recruited corals is essential for resilience against environmental changes.

Recent discoveries regarding a unique type of pink algae, crustose coralline algae (CCA), have illuminated a path forward. This algae releases vital metabolites into the ocean, which act as a beacon for coral larvae, guiding them to settle. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, the team ingeniously devised SNAP-X, a transparent ink that slowly effuses these beneficial metabolites into surrounding waters over a month.

A Surprising Success

During outdoor tests in natural seawater, the team encountered remarkable results. Coral larvae from the Hawaiian species Montipora capitata showed an astounding 20-fold increase in settlement on surfaces treated with SNAP-X. As the concentration of the metabolites increased, the success rate of these larvae settlements also blossomed.

In their pursuit of an ecological revival, the researchers have recognized the importance of timing. Synchronizing the application of SNAP-X with the annual spawning cycles of coral ensures that these larvae have the best chance to thrive. This strategy might unlock new pathways for coral populations to flourish once more.

The team is now focused on scaling up production of SNAP-X, hoping to bring this sustainable solution to real-world application. Since the ink doesn’t contain live organisms, its potential for safe deployment in various environments looks promising.
