The U.S. government has reached out to Tesla after reports of its self-driving cars making sudden stops, speeding, and veering into the wrong lanes during a recent robotaxi launch in Texas, officials announced on Tuesday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that it is reviewing videos shared online from the event, which raised concerns about the cars’ driving behavior.

“NHTSA is aware of the issues mentioned and is maintaining communication with Tesla to obtain more information,” the agency stated.

It clarified that while it does not “pre-approve” new technologies, it ensures that vehicles comply with safety standards and investigates possible defects when reported.

“Based on an evaluation of these reports and other findings, NHTSA will implement necessary measures to ensure safety,” they added.

On Sunday, near its facility in Austin, Texas, Tesla launched its anticipated robotaxi service, a move that supporters of CEO Elon Musk see as a potential next step for the company’s growth.

This launch comes on the heels of recent tensions between Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump, though Musk has since expressed regret over some statements made during that period.

NHTSA also mentioned that its investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software, which started in October 2024, is still ongoing.

The agency is currently reviewing Tesla’s responses related to the investigation, though much of the information has been classified as “confidential business information” under safety regulations.

“Due to this classification, Tesla’s response has been modified accordingly,” NHTSA noted. “After reviewing this information and others, we will take any needed actions to safeguard road safety.”
