The team originally anticipated they were hunting for a different species, known as Perrin’s beaked whale. However, nature had a surprise in store.

High-powered binoculars confirmed the presence of several whales surfacing gracefully off the starboard side. These appeared to be juveniles, and though the researchers couldn’t positively identify them at first, excitement began to build.

With a mix of eagerness and nerves, Pitman utilized a modified crossbow to secure a small sample of skin and blubber from one of the creatures.
