On Wednesday, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, highlighted the growing popularity of the company’s generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant. He mentioned that one billion people use it each month across all Meta platforms.

During the annual shareholder meeting, Zuckerberg reiterated this impressive figure as Meta competes with other tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI to lead in the Gen AI space.

It’s not entirely clear how many users actively seek out the chatbot compared to those who use Meta AI features passively, as the technology is integrated across various apps.

For comparison, Google launched its AI Overviews a year ago, which have attracted over 1.5 billion users, according to CEO Sundar Pichai. He stated, “That means Google Search is delivering Gen AI to more users than any other product globally.”

Google’s AI Overviews provide automatic summaries of search results, moving away from the traditional links to websites.

Pichai also mentioned that Google’s specialized Gemini AI app has over 400 million monthly users.

Despite ongoing issues, such as combating misinformation and defining robust business models, tech companies are launching new AI products rapidly. However, the broader social implications of this technology remain uncertain.

Meta introduced its standalone AI assistant app on April 29, which allows users direct access to its Gen AI technology.

“With one billion users engaging with Meta AI, we created a new standalone Meta AI app for you,” Zuckerberg said in an Instagram video at the time.

He described the app as “your personal AI,” primarily accessed through voice interaction, tailored to suit individual users.

According to CFO Susan Li, the most rapid growth of Meta AI is taking place on WhatsApp.

“This year, our goal is to enhance the experience and position Meta AI as the leading personal AI,” Zuckerberg stated at the end of April during the earnings announcement.
